dc.description.abstract This report describes a project which studied smalltooth sawfish populations throughout the United States. Reports of encounters with the sawfish were gathered from fishers, boaters, divers and researchers to examine the current distribution and habitat use patterns of this endangered species. The vast majority of encounters occurred in Florida waters. Information from this study was gathered for the National Sawfish Encounter Database, a tool developed to monitor sawfish populations in the US, with the majority of information gathered from 1998 through 2008 following promotion of this effort. This Database is now maintained by the Florida Museum of Natural History. en
