This report describes a manatee genetics project. Work done includes developing a minimally-disruptive technique for sampling manatee skin to yield high-quality genomic DNA, and to establish and maintain a collection of manatee DNA samples from the southwestern Florida population; to isolate at least 15 variable microsatellite DNA markers; and to use the microsatellite markers to supplement ongoing efforts in photo-identification to address questions of population variation, stability, and size. |
