Abstract:
This series includes three field diaries by Dr. Charles M. Breder, documenting his
expeditions to Bimini, an island chain in the Bahamas. During these research
trips the Lerner Marine Laboratory was constructed and established as a field
station of the American Museum of Natural History. In addition to observing
native fish species in their natural habitats, Breder also ran systematic
experiments in the laboratory’s aquaria to observe fish behavior. This included
recording responses to external stimuli such as a flashlight, and inferring fish
dominance in how they occupied shelters placed in the aquaria. He focuses on
several fish species including silversides, round herring, puffer fish, and needle
fish. Additionally, the diaries include descriptions of Breder’s personal activities.
