Abstract:
This report describes a study to identify the presence of optical brighteners in ambient surface waters using excitation-emission matrix fluorescence. Failing septic tanks or on site treatment and disposal systems with inadequate filtration are likely contributors. Samples were collected from three regions with suspected wastewater influence in Florida. The areas sampled are in the vicinity of the Steinhatchee River, Chassahowitzka River and Phillipi Creek in Florida.
