Abstract:
This report describes a project where resident adult bay scallops in Pine Island Sound, Florida, were surveyed during the week of June 23, 2003. Twenty-one scallops were found after an extensive, four-day survey. Twelve scallops were transferred to the Bay Shellfish Company hatchery in Palmetto, Florida, where they underwent conditioning for eventual spawning. The goal was for restoration of the scallop in the area. The results demonstrate that the restoration of bay scallop populations in Pine Island Sound through the release of competent larvae is a viable and cost-effective strategy.
