Abstract:
The goal of this project was to enable survivorship of cultured coral settlers in order to enhance prospects for successful restoration applications of coral larval culture by curtailing detrimental impacts of competition, primarily by sediment-binding algal turfs. Two 'friendly' types of crustose coralline algae (CCA), Titanoderma prototypum and Hydrolithon boergesenii, were collected and Montastraea faveolata was cultured to test the effects of the 'friendly' CCA species. Also tested was the effect of a rapid freshwater dip on settlement success as aquarist partners had suggested this might minimize the risks of ciliate infestations.
