Photographic identification and behavioral studies of Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) in southwest Florida.

Abstract

Images and sighting records of distinct individual manatees have been compiled in a computerized scar catalog for the southeastern United States, known as MIPS - Manatee Individual Photo-identification System. This report describes manatee photo-identification research that was conducted in southwest Florida (Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee Counties) in 1997-1998 to develop and increase sighting histories of manatees in that region to gain insight into manatee ecology. Surveys in southwest Florida expanded, updated, and improved MIPS by documenting individual manatees in less studied areas, revising the outdated Ft. Myers scar catalog, and establishing sighting histories for new distinct individuals. Geographical and temporal continuity were also important components of photo-identification studies, therefore year-round studies were conducted to improve the understanding of movement and use patterns within and between regions, the basic information required for determination and assessment of stock structures.
