Photograph, three men and a boy standing near smokehouse, c.1933-1934: Bass personal papers and Zinn photographs

Abstract

This item is part of a series of photographs from a scrapbook created by Donald Joseph Zinn, an employee and later a research fellow at the Bass lab. These images were most likely taken in 1934 while Zinn worked at the lab. Many of the photographs have either a caption in the scrapbook, notes on the back of the photograph, or both. The alternate title listed above comes from the caption in the scrapbook, while the back caption on the photograph reads "Stages V and VI in the making of ham. The smokehouse in which can be seen some meat; and Mr. Bass cutting some finished bacon outside, while Johnny, Colie, and Jimmy look on." The child pictured is John Bass III (Johnny), the dog is called 'Imp,' the man leaning over facing the camera on the left is John F. Bass Jr., the man crouching facing away from the camera to the right is Coaly, and the man to the right standing is Jimmy. Jimmy worked at the lab and appears in many other images from Zinn's scrapbook. The smokehouse is in the background.
