Photograph, two children and an older man sitting by the water, 1933: Bass personal papers

Abstract

This item is part of a series of photographs donated by the Bass family. The photographs include images from 1931 through 1933 as the Bass property was being developed. These images provide a valuable look at the Bass property as the buildings and structures went up that would become the Bass Biological Laboratory. Also included in these photographs are rare images of local workers, friends of the Bass family, and visitors to the area. The water in the background may be Lemon bay, Florida. The man in the center of this image is Mr. Church, and the older child on the right is John Bass III (Johnny). The younger child on the left is referred to as "Bille." Family letters mention a young cousin called Bitten, or Bitte, but the identity of the younger child in this photo remains unclear.
