Photograph, woman and two children in a rowboat on Lemon Bay, c.1933: Bass personal papers

Abstract

This item is part of a series of photographs donated by the Bass family. The photographs include images from 1931 through 1933 as the Bass property was being developed. These images provide a valuable look at the Bass property as the buildings and structures went up that would become the Bass Biological Laboratory. Also included in these photographs are rare images of local workers, friends of the Bass family, and visitors to the area. This image features a woman, probably Ellen Jensen, Else Bass' mother, with John Bass III (Johnny) and a child referred to as "Bille." Family letters mention a young cousin called Bitten, or Bitte, but the identity of the younger child in this photo remains unclear. The subjects are in a rowboat called the 'Johnny B.'on the water, and the dock and boathouse can be seen in the background.
