Abstract:
Based on manatee aerial survey data collected by Mote Marine Laboratory over the last eight years, a suite of preferred manatee sites in the Sarasota area was identified. This report describes the results of preliminary investigations conducted in 1993 of a site specific boat and in-water study of preferred manatee locations and habitat characterization of important manatee sites in this area. The research was performed in order to evaluate key characteristics which serve as either attractants or deterrents to manatees in non-wintering areas. Results indicated that unlike the distribution of manatees at wintering sites, which are primarily driven by a single factor (temperature), site selection by manatees at non-wintering sites is highly complex and involves many factors. Different factors include level of shelter, retreat, protection, disturbances and boat traffic.
