dc.description.abstract This report describes a project where shellfish samples were collected and analyzed following an oil spill in the Tampa Bay, Florida area, to determine the presence of oil spill related contamination. Clams from several locations in waters north of Mullet Key were found to be free of contamination, while clams from other sites in the same general area were found to have elevated levels of hydrocarbon contamination. Oyster samples collected in John's Pass were found to be grossly contaminated by oil. The oil related components found in this sample are not only potentially toxic to the oysters themselves, but would also be detrimental to any organisms preying on the stressed oysters. en
